My Friend, Gundy

WO4 Christopher “Gundy” Gunderson

You know that friend that you haven’t spoken to in a while?  The phone rings, you see the name; you are reminded immediately of your bond with the person on the other end.  You answer the call and without hesitation, you engage without ever having missed a day, a second, the time since you last spoke.

That was Gundy.

He entered my life at my lowest moment.  He listened.  He encouraged me.  He lifted me up.  We developed a bond that would take us through life’s ups and downs.

It was a normal workday.  My uniform was on, lunch was packed and I was pouring coffee into my travel mug for the ride to the base.  A voice behind me spoke and told me the news.  Chris Gunderson was killed this morning in a motorcycle accident.  I thought for sure I had heard the words incorrectly.  Not “My Chris”.  He just retired.  He just moved back home with his family.  He had just begun his next chapter.  I was in disbelief.

It only takes one second for everything to change.  One second to be reminded of how precious life is.

This page is dedicated to a special soldier, spouse, father, son, brother, uncle, friend whose life was cut too short.  We may never understand God’s way.  This we do know: He holds us in the palm of His hands and for those who accept Jesus Christ as their Savoir, we will be together again. Our loss is earthly.  Our faith is eternal.

You lived life, Gundy.  You will forever be loved and remembered.  Thank you for taking the time to be my friend.
